Practicing Mindfulness in class is a strategy that is increasingly applied by teachers.
The justifications for this are supported by experts in psychology and psychopedagogy, who analyze the multiple benefits it brings to the classroom.
However, from Santa Clara International School we want to go one step further, and publicize this beneficial practice for students, yes, but also for anyone interested. How does it work?
Mindfulness in class, how does it work?
When we talk about Mindfulness in class, we refer to bringing mindfulness to the present moment. Many people think of a Zen world, stop thinking, etc. The reality is that it has nothing to do with this: it is a practice totally alien to religion.
It is true that Mindfulness has its roots in models of transcendental meditation. However, the practice of mindfulness is used to multiply the ability to concentrate of minors.
One of its great advantages is that it costs nothing, and it brings many benefits. In fact, with just 5 to 15 minutes a day, great results can be achieved.
In that sense, we speak of a reduction in stress, at times such as exams, tests, etc. It also improves students’ ability to manage their emotions and open up to experiences in a healthier way. In reality, it is more of a way of approaching life.
Is it difficult to practice Mindfulness?
Actually, when it comes to practicing Mindfulness in class, we only need time and desire. It can be done through a guided meditation, as a relaxation session, in which the teacher helps students to keep their attention in the present moment.
On the other hand, there are numerous exercises and schools of psychology that bet on this model as a daily practice to take care of mental health. In that sense, examples of this would be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or, more recently, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Both disciplines confirm the remarkable health benefits that Mindfulness brings.
Logically, the student is free to practice on their own and at home. It is totally safe and does not pose any problem. Before the reverse: we know that more Mindfulness sessions do lead to great psychological well-being.
And why practice Mindfulness in class?
The reasons that lead us to propose Mindfulness in class are diverse. We live in a society of highly stimulated people: technology, especially the mobile phone, stressful jobs, fast pace of life, and so on.
It is important to take perspective and stop for a moment to take a breath. This space allows us to find ourselves, appreciate the moment, and slow down a bit the frenetic pace of contemporary life.
Since they are citizens of the world, our students have to learn to manage their emotions in the midst of such powerful stimuli. Mindfulness is a powerful tool that gives you the most important things: health, serenity and the ability to put life in perspective. A gift that, without a doubt, from our international school in Barcelona we want to give you.
